With the Miata down for the count and the Mustang too unreliable for me to risk driving once it’s fixed I needed cheap transportation fast. A coworker said she was selling a 98 Buick Riviera for $600 that is daily driven and runs great. Supercharged 3800? $600? Too good to be true!
I didn’t care about the paint. The interior was mint other than a well worn driver seat, and the engine ran great. Annoyingly it was a 97, so no supercharger, third gear slips “a bit”, and all four tires had “ plenty of tread” and were also dry rotted to shit. That’s gonna be a hard pass for me, but now I’m stuck in the awkward position of not having decent transportation. Damn.

I think you should buy a bike or a bus pass until you can afford a decent car.

is your idea of a “decent car” one which makes no horsepower under 7000 rpm and has a suspension so stiff it knocks your teeth out of your jaws?

Could you sell any of your cars and fix one to have a daily again?

I think he means one that does not break constantly.

My idea of a decent car is one that doesn’t need a lot of repairs. Unfortunately, OP’s last two cars needed extensive repairs.

in that case I think he could have picked a better example than something with a 3800 and a 4T60E.

You replied to HondaBro, who suggested that he save his money until he can buy something decent, which I’m 99% he would be referring to something Japanese and not a Riviera.

Sell your broken shit, buy a $1500 95 Corolla wagon, do nothing to it, save money for future purchase.

I’ve got no broken shit I can sell for money. The Mustang has a loan to pay off when I sell it, and I’ll be lucky to sell it for the loan. In its disassembled state the Miata is worth ~$1000 at most and I have $6000 in it so it will continue to be a paid-for chunk of metal sitting at my friend’s land until I can get back to it.

Miata has suspension damage and engine troubles. The Mustang has broken twice in the last pay period, left me stranded once, and cost me somewhere around $600 in parts and several weekends fixing shit on it since I got it a month ago. And after all this work and money I’m left with a mediocre-to-begin with 220hp V6 boat anchor.

Nope. I owe on the Mustang, and I’ll be lucky to sell it for enough to pay off the loan. The Miata is worth more sitting at my friend’s place than it is trying to sell it in its current state. Mistakes were made.

Enough electrical issues have cropped up that it sits at my dad’s (it’s his car) for now. What’s amusing is that out of all the stuff I did to it the electricals were something I stayed far away from.

My commute is 20 miles @ 70mph each way and we have no public transport here. It’s shitty.

Have you considered a motorcycle? I don’t know if you have a motorcycle license or not, but I think you should look into those as cheap, cost-efficient transportation.

The Miata needs several weeks worth of fabrication to be running again, none of which I can do without my friend/mentor who is out of town for the next week. The Mustang runs (I think, currently in the shop for a new water pump) but I’m selling it as soon as I get the titlework back from the state so I can pay off the loan (hopefully).

aw hell naw. I commute in the dark on a busy highway and people here drive like idiots. That was sketchy enough in a tiny Miata.

I think I would try to focus on the fact that you have a plan and that while it will probably be a rough couple of weeks. It will get better after that and will seem even less significant a year from now. It’s a speedbump but it's not permanent

$600 is pretty cheap. If it craps, $300 at the scrapyard.

I’m commuting to college and work from home and I had to prioritize what I wanted (RWD, manual, fun) into a good daily that would be reliable easy to work on and cheap to run because I live an hour from work and school and don’t have a ton of time, energy or money right now so I bought this:
2005 Corolla LE auto 120,000 miles for $3700 and it I love it because I understand what it is and is supposed to be. It's my daily it's not flashy it's not really fast but it should be rock solid, I've done a lot of preventative work and it's not rusty and all I need from it is 3-4 years. It's worth mentioning that I live 25 miles away from work/school (I work on campus) so whatever I bought needed to be able to handle a long commute and be fuel efficient so you could probably get something else but my point is that you may be better off with simple and boring daily driver after selling the mustang even though it's not as cool

yeah, tough spot. once the mustang is fixed, what else is wrong with it? if not much, then wring it out as a driver until you can get monies ahead. drivers dont need to be fun.

once it’s fixed it has a bad alignment and bad strut mounts and a history of breaking every week, so I want it to just SIT until I can sell it so nothing else has the chance to break.

Did you find out the problem with the mustang? Surely it's not more than $600 to get the cooling system sorted out...

Not sure what you were expecting for $600 car. The great thing about a sub $1k car is that no matter what’s wrong with it, it’ll never lose more than a couple hundred dollars value.
